The Science Behind PVC Leather
PVC artificial leather production process
Calendering
- Prepare raw materials: use PVC resin, plasticizer, stabilizer, filler and pigment, etc.
- Mixing and plasticizing: After the raw materials are mixed evenly, they are plasticized into a melt at high temperature (about 150°C).
- Sheet forming: The melt is pressed into a continuous sheet through a calender with the temperature controlled at 150°C to 200°C.
- Lamination: Laminating the PVC sheet to a fabric substrate such as polyester or cotton.
- Embossing: Use an embossing roller (such as a “mesh wheel”) to imprint a texture onto the surface, simulating the look of genuine leather.
- Cooling and coiling: After cooling, roll into large rolls and prepare for packaging.
Coating method (release paper method)
- Prepare raw materials: Use PVC paste resin, plasticizer, stabilizer and pigment to make a uniform slurry.
- Coating: Coat the slurry onto a textured release paper, possibly using a “paint basin” to hold the slurry.
- Drying and curing: Heat in an oven (160°C to 200°C) to dry and cure.
- Optional foaming: If you need to increase the thickness, you can use foaming treatment.
- Bonding and separation: Use glue to stick the PVC layer to the fabric substrate, and then peel off the release paper.
- Surface treatment: Dyeing, polishing or further embossing.
- Cooling and coiling: After cooling, roll into large rolls.
